Installation & Site Planning

The XL Natural Bowl with Swirl is a substantial stone fountain that requires proper site preparation and professional-grade handling. Plan for the 52.5-inch-square reservoir, 76-inch-square splash apron, water and electrical access, and suitable lifting equipment.

Important: Fountain Weight & Basin Support

The 36-inch bowl weighs approximately 1,235 pounds, while the 48-inch bowl weighs approximately 2,375 pounds.

The standard Altum AquaBox® has a published maximum static-load rating of up to 2,500 pounds. The 48-inch kit includes an aluminum grate upgrade for heavier applications, but a separate maximum load rating for that configuration is not published.

Before installation, confirm the complete support arrangement, load distribution, and positioning of the stone bowl with our Sales and Technical Team, particularly for the 48-inch model.

Installation Overview

Prepare the Location

Choose a level location with access to water and a suitable GFCI-protected electrical outlet. Plan the reservoir footprint, splash apron, equipment access, and lifting requirements. Locate underground utilities before excavation.

Install the Reservoir

For an in-ground Altum installation, the basin guide specifies an excavation approximately 21 inches deep. Prepare a firm, level base and position the reservoir according to the installation instructions.

Position the Fountain

Install the pump, plumbing, supports, grates, and sediment screen. Confirm the load-support arrangement before using appropriate lifting equipment to position the limestone bowl.

Fill, Test & Finish

Fill the reservoir, start the pump, and adjust the water flow. Check water return and pump access before completing the landscape with the included splash apron and polished pebbles.

Installation Note: Excavation, site preparation, lifting equipment, electrical work, landscaping materials, and installation labor are not included. Lighting and automatic water-level equipment are optional accessories.

Care & Maintenance

Regular care helps maintain consistent water flow and reliable fountain operation.

  • Maintain enough water in the reservoir to keep the pump submerged.
  • Remove leaves and debris from the bowl, sediment screen, and surrounding pebble area.
  • Clean the pump intake, pre-filter, and impeller as directed in the pump manual.
  • Check the flow pattern and confirm water is returning to the reservoir.
  • Follow the appropriate winter-care instructions to protect the pump and plumbing from freezing conditions.

For added convenience, our optional Fountain Basin Auto Fill Kit can help maintain the reservoir water level. This accessory is sold separately and requires a suitable water-supply connection.

Your fountain kit includes components with different warranty terms:

Does the XL Natural Bowl with Swirl come as a complete fountain kit?

Yes. Each kit includes the selected limestone bowl, 52-inch Altum AquaBox® reservoir, matching pump, plumbing, flow control valve, sediment screen, polished pebbles, and splash apron. Installation labor, site preparation, lighting, and automatic water-level equipment are not included.

Do I need an existing pond to install this fountain?

No. The fountain operates with a concealed recirculating reservoir. Water flows over the stone bowl and returns through the finished surface to the basin below, eliminating the need for an exposed pond.

Will every limestone bowl look exactly the same?

No. Because each bowl is made from natural limestone, variations in stone color, markings, and texture are expected. These natural characteristics are part of what makes each fountain distinctive.

Can I install this fountain myself?

Due to the substantial weight of the limestone bowls, we recommend qualified installers with appropriate lifting equipment. Proper basin support, site preparation, and load distribution are especially important for the larger 48-inch fountain.

Can I add fountain lighting or automatic water filling?

Yes. Lighting and automatic water-level equipment may be added separately. Our Fountain Basin Auto Fill Kit is an available option for maintaining water levels. Contact our team for assistance selecting equipment that suits your installation.

How should I prepare my fountain for winter?
