Installation & Routine Care

Shut Down the Pump

Disconnect power before reaching into the skimmer or waterfall box, then open the unit according to its installation guide.

Remove the Old Mat

Note its orientation and the order of the surrounding media before lifting it out. Remove collected debris from the chamber.

Position the New Mat

Place it in the same position as the original. In the waterfall box, the filter mat lies horizontally beneath the Bacti-Twist® media.

Restart & Check Flow

Reassemble the unit, restore power and confirm that water moves normally without bypassing the filtration media.

Cleaning tip: Check the skimmer net and mat regularly and rinse them as debris accumulates. Pond conditions vary, so service frequency will be higher during leaf season, after storms or whenever restricted flow lowers the water level in the pump chamber. Do not clean filter pads with soap or bleach.

Which Blue Thumb models use this replacement mat?

SERMAT fits the DIY Pond Waterfall 1200 (PB1151), DIY Pond Skimmer 90 (PB1304) and DIY Pond Waterfall 1500 (PB1281). PB1151 and PB1304 were formerly sold under the Serenity name; PB1281 was associated with the 14" Crystal Falls name.

Is the mat itself 14 inches wide?

No. The replacement mat measures 12" × 12.7" × 1.25". The 14-inch description refers to the spillway width of compatible waterfall boxes.

Does this fit a 14-inch Elite waterfall box?

No. Small Elite waterfall boxes use a different Matala replacement product. Match your equipment item number rather than ordering by spillway width alone.

Does it fit the Crystal Falls Skimmer / DIY Pond Skimmer 180?

No. The DIY Pond Skimmer 180 / Crystal Falls Skimmer (PB1311) uses the larger CRYMAT replacement mat, not SERMAT.

How many mats are included?

You receive one replacement filter mat. The skimmer or waterfall box and all other filter media and pond components are sold separately.

Where does the mat go?

In the DIY Pond Skimmer 90, it installs in the skimmer’s mechanical-filtration area with the debris net. In the compatible waterfall boxes, it lies horizontally in the bottom of the box beneath the Bacti-Twist® biological media. Follow the model-specific guide above.

How often should I clean or replace it?

Inspect and rinse the mat as debris accumulates. Skimmer service frequency varies with leaf fall, storms, fish load and feeding. Blue Thumb does not publish a fixed replacement interval for SERMAT; replace it when the existing mat is worn or can no longer be cleaned effectively.
