DIY Pond Skimmer 90

Keep floating leaves, twigs, and other debris from settling to the bottom of your pond. Our DIY Pond Skimmer 90, formerly the Serenity Skimmer, provides two-stage mechanical filtration while housing your pond pump inside a protected chamber. Designed for smaller ponds and water gardens, this compact skimmer includes a natural-looking landscape lid to help conceal the equipment along the pond edge.

90 sq. ft. Maximum pond surface area
2,000 GPH Maximum skimmer flow
7.5" × 6.25" Snout opening (W × H)
Lifetime Limited plastic-component warranty

A Cleaner Pond Starts at the Surface

Capture Debris Before It Sinks

The skimmer draws floating debris toward its opening and collects larger material in the removable mesh net. Removing leaves before they decompose helps reduce organic buildup and routine pond cleanup.

Two Stages of Mechanical Filtration

Water passes through the mesh debris net and filter mat before reaching the pump chamber. The net captures larger material while the mat helps remove smaller particles.

Concealed Equipment, Accessible Maintenance

The included natural-looking lid helps the skimmer blend into surrounding landscaping while allowing access to the filter media and pump for inspection and cleaning.

Is the DIY Pond Skimmer 90 Right for Your Pond?

Choose this model for a pond with up to 90 square feet of surface area and a pump system that operates within the skimmer's 2,000 GPH maximum flow rating. Actual pump selection also depends on the required circulation, plumbing, elevation change, and any connected waterfall filter.

This is a mechanical pond skimmer, not a complete pond filtration system. A compatible pump is required and sold separately. For larger ponds, heavier debris loads, or higher pump flow, compare our DIY Pond Skimmer 180 and Small Elite Skimmer.

Before ordering: Confirm your pond surface area, intended pump flow, available installation space, and preferred lid color.

Installation Planning & Setup

The DIY Pond Skimmer 90 is installed at the pond edge and connects directly to the pond liner. Proper positioning, leveling, sealing, and pump selection are important for dependable operation.

1

Choose the Location

Position the skimmer along the pond edge, ideally opposite the waterfall, to support circulation across the pond surface. Allow access for cleaning the net and mat.

2

Excavate & Level

Excavate an opening a few inches larger than the skimmer box. Compact the base and level the housing. Our installation guide specifies positioning the top of the skimmer approximately 3.5 inches above the desired pond water level.

3

Attach the Pond Liner

Use the supplied silicone, faceplate snout, clips, and mounting hardware to attach the pond liner. Follow the installation manual's sealing and fastening sequence to help prevent leaks.

4

Install & Test the Pump

Place your compatible submersible pump in the rear chamber and connect the discharge plumbing. Route the power cord through the designated notch, position the filter media, and confirm normal circulation before completing landscaping.

Installation Tip: Plan Around the Entire Assembly

The natural landscape lid extends beyond the skimmer housing. Allow room for the lid, connected plumbing, excavation, and maintenance access. Review the installation drawings before digging or cutting the pond liner.

Routine Care & Seasonal Maintenance

Clean the Net & Filter Mat

Inspect the mesh net and filter mat regularly and clean them whenever accumulated debris begins restricting water movement. The mesh net collects larger leaves and debris, while the mat provides the second stage of mechanical filtration.

Watch the Pump Chamber Water Level

If the water level in the pump chamber becomes noticeably lower than the water level in the pond during operation, check the filter media for buildup or restrictions. Disconnect pump power before servicing the skimmer.

Prepare for Freezing Conditions

Before prolonged freezing weather, clean the filtration media and follow the winter-storage instructions for your specific pump and plumbing arrangement. Seasonal requirements vary by pump model, pond depth, and climate.

Product Resources & Installation Guides

Review the skimmer installation manual before beginning your project. These Blue Thumb resources also provide useful information for pond planning, maintenance, and seasonal care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the DIY Pond Skimmer 90 include a pump?

No. The skimmer includes its housing, debris net, filter mat, natural landscape lid, and installation hardware. A compatible pond pump must be purchased separately. Select a pump that fits the rear chamber and operates within the skimmer's maximum flow rating.

Can I install this skimmer in an existing pond?

Yes. The skimmer is suitable for new and existing ponds when installation conditions permit. Retrofitting requires excavation at the pond edge and a properly sealed connection to the existing pond liner. Review the installation guide before modifying an established pond.

Does the skimmer provide biological filtration?

The included net and filter mat provide mechanical filtration by collecting floating and suspended debris. For biological filtration, pair the skimmer with an appropriately sized biological waterfall filter or another suitable biological filtration system.

What color landscape lid comes with the skimmer?

One natural-looking landscape lid is included. Choose Sandstone or Gray using the product options before adding the skimmer to your cart. Both colors are intended to help conceal the equipment in surrounding landscaping.

Can I use a pump rated above 2,000 GPH?

The maximum published flow rating for this skimmer is 2,000 GPH. Pump performance varies with head height and plumbing restrictions, but pump selection must not exceed the skimmer's operating capacity. Contact our Sales/Tech Team if you need help confirming the correct configuration.

How often should I clean the skimmer?

Cleaning frequency depends on the amount of debris entering the pond. Inspect the mesh net and filter mat routinely and clean them whenever buildup restricts water flow. Check more frequently during autumn leaf fall and after storms.

Which replacement net and filter mat fit this model?

The DIY Pond Skimmer 90 (PB1304) uses the SERMAT replacement filter mat and NET7SK replacement mesh debris net. These parts are sized for this skimmer. Verify the exact replacement option before purchasing.

What warranty covers the DIY Pond Skimmer 90?

Our qualifying Blue Thumb engineered plastic skimmer components carry a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects for the original purchaser. Proper installation according to the applicable manual is required. Modifications can void coverage, and labor and freight costs are excluded. Review our official warranty document for complete terms.
