The Blue Thumb DIY Pond Waterfall 1200 combines biological filtration, water movement and a 14-inch waterfall spillway in one compact unit. Formerly sold as the Serenity Waterfall, it is designed for new or existing ponds up to 1,200 gallons and supports a cleaner, better-aerated pond environment.
Water from a separately purchased pump enters through the 1.5-inch plumbing connection, passes through the included filter mat and biological media, and returns to the pond over the spillway. The box can be concealed with surrounding rockwork to create a natural-looking waterfall.
Key Features
- For ponds up to 1,200 gallons: Suitable for an approximate pond footprint of up to 8 by 11 feet or a similarly sized pond.

Installation and Care
- Position the waterfall at the pond edge or head of the stream. When used with a skimmer, place the waterfall opposite the skimmer to promote circulation.
- Compact the base, level the box from side to side and tilt it slightly forward—approximately one-quarter bubble on a level—so water moves toward the spillway.
- Connect the pump line to the rear 1.5-inch fitting. Use Teflon tape on threaded connections and the appropriate primer, cement or hose clamp for the selected pipe or tubing.
- Install the white filter mat in the bottom of the box and place the biological media above it.
Inspect the media periodically and clean it thoroughly about once per year when pond water is at its coldest or below 50°F. When possible, rinse the media with collected pond water; chlorinated tap water can kill the beneficial bacteria living on it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size pond is the DIY Pond Waterfall 1200 designed for?
It is rated for ponds up to 1,200 gallons, with an approximate maximum footprint of 8 by 11 feet or a similarly sized pond.
Is a pump included?
No. A pond pump is required and sold separately. Account for the height and plumbing distance between the pump and waterfall when choosing a pump, and do not exceed 2,000 GPH at the waterfall box.
Is biological filter media included?
The current Blue Thumb listing includes a bio filter mat and mesh media bag. Blue Thumb’s PB1151 installation guide depicts biological media used above the filter mat.
Is this a complete pond kit?
No. This is the biological waterfall-filter portion of a pond system. The pump, pipe or tubing, pond liner, underlayment, rock and other construction materials are not included.
Can it be added to an existing pond?
Yes. The unit can be used for a new pond or incorporated into an existing pond or water garden when compatible liner, plumbing and pump connections can be provided.
How should the filter media be cleaned?
Blue Thumb recommends a thorough cleaning about once per year when pond water is at its coldest or below 50°F. Rinse with collected pond water when possible so chlorine does not kill the beneficial bacteria.
Is a skimmer required?
A skimmer is not included with this waterfall box. Blue Thumb’s installation layout pairs the waterfall with a skimmer positioned at the opposite end of the pond to improve circulation and remove surface debris.
Is this the former Serenity Waterfall?
Yes. SKU PB1151 was formerly sold under the Serenity Waterfall name and is now called the Blue Thumb DIY Pond Waterfall 1200.
