Restore the mechanical and biological filtration inside your Blue Thumb Elite Waterfall Box with a green Matala replacement mat cut for the selected box size. Its rigid, coarse fiber structure gives water an open path through the filter while trapping debris and providing surface area for beneficial bacteria.

Have a 40" Elite Waterfall Box?

The 40-inch box uses two 24" × 39" half sheets rather than one of the three pre-cut options above. Choose the green MTHSGR option on our Matala Half-Sheet Filter Media page. Black half-sheet media is also available there for very coarse, high-flow filtration.

Optional Biological Media

The Elite Waterfall manual recommends placing a media bag filled with biological media above the horizontal Matala mats. Bacti-Twist Biological Filter Media is optional and sold separately.

Install, Maintain and Winterize the Media

Confirm the Size

Identify the spillway width of your Elite Waterfall Box and compare the existing mat dimensions before ordering.

Place the Mats

For the standard arrangement, position two green Matala mats horizontally in the bottom of the waterfall box. Place the filled media bag above them when that optional media is used.

Clean as Needed

Inspect the media as pond conditions require. Our Pond Maintenance Guide calls for a thorough waterfall-box media cleaning about once per year, with frequency adjusted for debris and fish load.

Protect Beneficial Bacteria

Do not clean all biological media at the same time, and do not use chlorinated tap water for routine media cleaning. During winter shutdown in prolonged freezing climates, rinse the media and store it for the season according to the pond maintenance guide.

Each Elite Waterfall Box uses two green Matala mats. This listing supplies one mat in the size you select, so order quantity two when replacing the complete pair.

How do I choose the correct size?

Match the option to your Elite Waterfall Box spillway width: 14, 22 or 30 inches. You can also compare the dimensions of your existing mat with the measurements in the size cards above.

Does this listing fit the 40-inch Elite Waterfall Box?

No 40-inch option is available in this listing. The 40-inch Elite box uses two 24" × 39" half sheets; choose green MTHSGR on the linked Matala Half-Sheet Filter Media page.

Is the waterfall box included?

No. This is one replacement filter mat only. The waterfall box, pump, plumbing, media bag and other pond components are not included.

What does green Matala mean?

Green identifies the coarse, semi-open Matala grade used in Elite Waterfall Boxes. It is designed to maintain good water flow while trapping debris and supporting biological filtration.

Is Bacti-Twist media required?

No. Bacti-Twist is an optional biological media sold separately. The Elite Waterfall manual recommends it for use inside the media bag above the Matala mats.

How often should the Matala media be cleaned?

Can I rinse the mat with tap water?
