Installation overview

Plan for excavation, lifting, plumbing, and final flow adjustment

This overview is for purchasing and site planning. Follow the supplied instructions and linked manuals for the complete installation procedure.

Choose the viewing angle

Select a prominent outdoor location with enough room for the basin and splash apron, plus practical access to water and GFCI-protected power.

Excavate and prepare the base

The Altum guide calls for a hole slightly wider than the basin and 21 inches deep. Remove sharp rocks and roots, then level and compact a sand or small-gravel base.

Set and support the basin

Keep the basin level, orient pump access toward electrical service, install the center support, and compact backfill. With a splash apron, follow the manual’s below-grade and slope guidance.

Route the system

Position the pumps beneath the access panel, route tubing clear of molded support points, and connect the single and double manifolds, ball valves, and included auto-fill kit.

Place and secure the columns

Use handling equipment and help appropriate for pieces up to approximately 180 pounds. Position the columns for the planned view and install the GFRC Cable Support Kit as directed.

Fill, test, and finish

Fill with clean water before powering the submerged pumps. Adjust each flow with the ball valves, check splash return, and cover the grate with the selected polished pebbles.

Ownership and seasonal care

Protect water level, pump performance, and freeze-sensitive parts

Routine care

  • Keep the basin at the operating water level; the included auto-fill helps replace normal evaporation.
  • Remove leaves and debris before they collect beneath the decorative pebbles or restrict the pump intakes.
  • Clean the pump inlet guards, foam pre-filters, and impellers as needed. Blue Thumb recommends white vinegar for mineral buildup on the impeller.
  • Check the three flows and adjust the ball valves after cleaning or water-level changes.

Cold-weather care

  • Before prolonged freezing conditions, unplug, remove, clean, empty, and store the pumps where they cannot freeze.
  • Protect or drain vulnerable plumbing and the auto-fill supply line according to the supplied instructions.
  • Do not automatically empty the buried reservoir. Blue Thumb’s general GFRC guidance keeps many buried basins approximately 50% full where specified to help resist freeze/thaw ground movement.
  • Use the exact kit instructions and current winter-care guide for your climate and installation.
Electrical and pump safety: connect each three-prong pump plug only to a dry, flood-protected GFCI outlet that matches the pump nameplate. Never lift a pump by its power cord, never operate a pump dry, unplug power before pump service, and never cut the cord or direct-wire the pump.

Is this a complete recirculating fountain kit?

Yes. It includes the three GFRC columns, cable support kit, Altum AquaBox® basin with screen, two Mag-Drive pumps, single and double manifolds with ball valves, three tubing sets, automatic fill kit, splash apron, 320 pounds of polished pebbles, and installation instructions. Site work, utilities, labor, exterior lighting, and landscaping are not included.

Does the Grand Triple Fountain need an open pond?

No. Water returns through the decorative pebble surface to the concealed 220-gallon Altum reservoir and is recirculated by the two submerged pumps.

How large is the installed system?

The visible columns are 42, 54, and 66 inches tall. Beneath them, the Altum AquaBox® measures 52.5 × 52.5 × 20 inches high. The kit also includes a 10 × 10-foot liner splash apron, so plan beyond the basin edge for grading and splash return.

Which finishes are available?

Choose Dapple Gray, Chestnut Brown, or Dark Espresso. Chestnut Brown and Dark Espresso require approximately a two-week lead time.

Are both pebble colors included?

No. The kit includes 320 pounds of polished pebbles in the one color you select: Black or Mixed.

What electrical and water connections are needed?

Plan nearby dry, flood-protected GFCI electrical service for the two three-prong pump plugs. The included ABDAUTO kit connects to a 1/2-inch water line or garden hose to replace water lost through evaporation.

Is this a one-person installation?

No. The installation requires excavation, a level and compacted base, plumbing and utility connections, and safe handling of columns weighing up to approximately 180 pounds each. Plan a qualified crew and suitable lifting equipment; professional installation may be appropriate.

Is landscape lighting included?

No. Exterior accent lights visible in lifestyle imagery are not listed as kit components. Lighting, plants, edging, and surrounding hardscape or landscape materials are sold or supplied separately.

How should the fountain be winterized?

Before prolonged freezing weather, unplug, remove, clean, empty, and protect the pumps from freezing; also protect vulnerable plumbing and the auto-fill line. Do not automatically drain the buried basin. Follow the supplied instructions and Blue Thumb’s current GFRC winter-care guidance for the correct reservoir level and procedure for your installation.
