Small 8" Elite Pond Skimmer

Keep leaves, twigs, and floating debris from settling to the bottom of your pond with our Small Elite Pond Skimmer. Designed for contractor-grade performance, this 8-inch mechanical skimmer captures surface debris, houses a single pond pump, and helps simplify routine pond maintenance.

The reinforced housing includes a removable natural-looking lid, stainless steel hardware, a green Matala filter mat, and a mesh debris net. Its compact Elite Series design is ideal for properly sized residential ponds where dependable surface filtration and convenient pump access matter.

Is the Small Elite Skimmer Right for Your Pond?

The Small Elite Skimmer is designed for ponds with a surface area up to approximately 180 square feet, such as an 11' × 16' pond or a similarly sized design. It accommodates one pump and has a recommended operating flow of 2,500–3,500 gallons per hour.

Check your pond's surface area, planned flow rate, plumbing layout, and pump dimensions before ordering. For a larger pond, higher flow requirement, or dual-pump design, compare our Medium 10" Elite Skimmer and Large 15" Elite Skimmer.

Important: This listing is for the skimmer assembly and included accessories, not a complete pond filtration system. The recirculating pump is sold separately.

The Small Elite Skimmer includes a pre-plumbed fitting for our Hudson Automatic Water Fill Kit (PB1342). When properly installed and connected to a compatible water supply, this optional kit replaces water lost through evaporation and helps maintain a more consistent operating level.

Sold separately: PB1342 automatic-fill kit. The fitting and plug are included with the skimmer, but the automatic-fill valve assembly is not.

How the Elite Skimmer Fits Into Your Pond System

The skimmer handles surface-debris collection in a recirculating pond system. Water enters through the weir, passes through the debris net and Matala filter mat, and reaches the pump chamber. A properly selected pump can then send water through the plumbing to a waterfall filter or another compatible return.

For a complete ecosystem-style pond, we commonly pair mechanical skimming with a biological waterfall filter, a properly sized pond pump, flexible PVC plumbing, protective underlayment, and fish-friendly EPDM rubber pond liner. Rocks and gravel can help protect the liner, add surface area for beneficial bacteria, and create a natural-looking finish.

Not included with this skimmer: Pump, complete pump discharge assembly, external plumbing hose, waterfall filter, pond liner, underlayment, rockwork, gravel, and additional pond construction materials.

Installation Overview

Proper placement, leveling, plumbing, and liner attachment are important for reliable skimmer operation. Review our full installation manual before beginning excavation or attaching the pond liner.

Choose the Skimmer Location

Position the skimmer along the pond edge, preferably opposite the waterfall or water return to promote circulation. Plan enough surrounding space for the front snout, connections, and access to the removable lid.

Excavate, Position & Level

Excavate an area slightly larger than the skimmer housing. Follow the installation manual's water-level measurements, compact the base, and confirm that the skimmer is level from front to back and side to side before carefully backfilling.

Prepare Overflow & Plumbing

Install the overflow fittings and route the overflow line to a suitable drainage location. Insert the rubber Uni-Seals in the discharge openings, plug the unused connection, and prepare the optional automatic-fill fitting if that accessory will be installed.

Attach the Pond Liner

Position the liner against the skimmer face without pulling it tight. Use the included silicone, faceplate snout, and stainless steel fasteners according to the manual to create the watertight liner connection.

Install the Pump & Filtration Components

Place a compatible pump in the rear chamber, connect the discharge plumbing, and route its cord through the designated notch. Install the mesh debris net, Matala mat, and mat holder before starting the system.

Important Water-Level & Liner Installation Tip

Our Elite Skimmer installation manual specifies positioning the top of the skimmer housing approximately 5" above the intended pond water level. This places the water approximately 1" below the upper edge of the snout opening during normal operation.

Proper elevation helps the floating weir operate as intended. Carefully follow the official manual for the exact faceplate sealing and attachment procedure to avoid leaks.

Cleaning, Maintenance & Seasonal Care

Routine Debris Removal

Periodically remove accumulated leaves and debris from the mesh net. Rinse the Matala filter mat when needed to maintain good flow through the skimmer.

Our installation manual suggests that cleaning may typically be needed every 10–14 days, although ponds with heavy leaf fall, fish activity, or greater debris loads may require more frequent attention.

Watch for Reduced Flow

If the pump-chamber water level drops noticeably below the pond water level, inspect the debris net and filter mat for accumulated material that could be restricting incoming water.

Maintaining an appropriate water level and keeping mechanical filtration components clear helps the pump receive adequate water.

Winter Preparation

In climates with prolonged freezing conditions, follow the pump manufacturer's winterization requirements and our Elite Skimmer maintenance instructions.

The skimmer manual recommends removing and protecting the pump from freezing when applicable, and rinsing and storing the net and filter mat during seasonal shutdown.

Replacement Parts

Inspect the mesh net, Matala mat, and stainless holder during routine service. If a component becomes damaged or needs replacement, select the version specifically listed for the Small 8" Elite Skimmer.

Do not assume the Medium or Large Elite replacement components will fit this model.

Post-purchase product modifications void the warranty. Warranty compensation is limited to eligible merchandise repair, replacement, or value and does not cover associated labor or freight costs.

No. The Small Elite Skimmer includes the housing, natural-look lid, debris net, Matala filter mat, holder, and specified installation hardware. The pond pump, external plumbing, and other complete pond-system components are sold separately.

Can I use two pumps inside this skimmer?

The Small 8" Elite Skimmer is specified for a single-pump configuration. If your installation requires two pumps, review our Medium or Large Elite Skimmer options, which are designed to accommodate single- or dual-pump configurations.

How do I know whether my pump will fit?

What is the difference between the Sandstone and Gray lids?

Can I add an automatic water-fill valve later?

Yes. The skimmer includes a pre-plumbed automatic-fill fitting with a plug. Our compatible Hudson Automatic Water Fill Kit, PB1342, is available separately and can be installed according to its instructions and water-supply requirements.

Does this skimmer replace a biological waterfall filter?

No. The skimmer primarily provides mechanical filtration by collecting floating debris and suspended particles. In an ecosystem-style pond, a biological waterfall filter provides an additional stage that supports beneficial bacteria. The two components perform different functions and are commonly used together.

Which replacement filter mat and debris net do I need?

The Small 8" Elite Skimmer uses the MT8GR green Matala replacement mat and NET8SK mesh debris net. The matching stainless steel mat holder is SS8SKS. Select the 8" Elite variation when ordering from a replacement-parts page.

How often should I clean the skimmer?
