Refills as Water Drops
When evaporation or normal fountain splash lowers the reservoir level, the float drops and opens the incoming water supply.
The 1/2-inch Fountain Basin Auto Fill Kit uses an adjustable float valve to replace water as the reservoir level drops. It is designed for Blue Thumb fountain basins and AquaBox® reservoirs and can connect to either a 1/2-inch water line or a garden hose.
The float responds directly to the water level inside the reservoir. No electrical connection is required for the valve itself.
When evaporation or normal fountain splash lowers the reservoir level, the float drops and opens the incoming water supply.
As the basin refills, the float rises and closes the valve. The float angle can be adjusted to establish the desired operating level.
Included fittings support connection to a 1/2-inch irrigation or poly water line or to a standard garden hose.
The reservoir style determines which Blue Thumb auto-fill system should be used.
Formal Falls® installation? Blue Thumb materials contain differing application guidance. Ask the Sales/Tech Team to confirm the correct valve kit for your exact basin before ordering.
The official guide identifies the valve and connection hardware needed for both supported connection methods.
The maximum pressure through Blue Thumb auto-fill valves is 30 PSI. If the incoming supply exceeds 30 PSI, add the 30 PSI Regulator in the incoming line. The regulator is sold separately. Excess pressure may hold the valve in the fill position and cause continuous operation.
If the incoming pressure is unknown, check it with a pressure gauge or ask a qualified installer before opening the water supply.
Review the complete Blue Thumb installation guide before connecting the water supply. Confirm that the float has room to move freely after the basin cover is installed.
Use the threaded spinweld provided on a compatible Blue Thumb fountain basin.
Thread the valve into the spinweld. For products without a threaded spinweld, the official guide shows the valve mounted through a 1/2-inch opening with the supplied nut and O-ring.
Apply the included PTFE tape clockwise so it remains in place as the fitting is tightened.
Use the included barb and clamp for a 1/2-inch line or the included swivel fitting for a garden hose.
Adjust the float, restore the water supply and test every connection for leaks and reliable shutoff.
Float-clearance note: For maximum basin fill, the guide recommends setting the float at approximately a 30–40-degree angle. The float must not contact the basin cover, because interference can prevent shutoff and cause an overflow.
Basin-modification note: Confirm suitability and warranty implications before drilling or modifying any basin.
Permanent water-supply connections: Follow local plumbing requirements and install approved backflow protection when required. Consult a licensed plumber if the applicable requirements are unclear.
Check that the float moves freely and does not touch the basin cover, pump, plumbing or accumulated debris.
Inspect the valve, fittings and incoming supply periodically. An auto-fill system can add water when a leak occurs, but it does not correct the source of the water loss.
If filling does not stop, shut off the supply and check float clearance, the set angle and whether incoming pressure exceeds 30 PSI.
Keep the installation guide available while mounting the valve, selecting the connection hardware and setting the operating water level.
This official Blue Thumb video demonstrates the exact ABDAUTO kit. The fountain basin and connected water supply shown are sold separately.
Blue Thumb’s Sales/Tech Team can help confirm basin compatibility, water-pressure requirements and the correct auto-fill kit for a fountain, Formal Falls®, pond or Pond-less waterfall installation.
When the basin level drops, the float lowers and opens the valve. Incoming water raises the float until the valve closes at the selected operating level.
ABDAUTO is intended primarily for Blue Thumb fountain basins and AquaBox® reservoirs. For ponds and Pond-less waterfall systems using an Elite Skimmer or Pump Canyon®, use the PB1342 Hudson Automatic Water Fill Kit. Confirm Formal Falls® compatibility with Blue Thumb before ordering.
Yes. The kit includes a swivel garden-hose adapter. It also includes a threaded barb fitting and hose clamp for connection to a 1/2-inch irrigation or poly water line.
It can connect to a suitable garden hose or 1/2-inch water line, provided pressure at the valve does not exceed 30 PSI. Permanent connections must follow applicable plumbing and backflow-prevention requirements.
No. The regulator is sold separately. It is required when incoming supply pressure exceeds the valve’s 30 PSI maximum.
Loosen the wingnut, tilt the float to the desired height and retighten it. The guide recommends an angle of approximately 30–40 degrees for maximum basin fill. Make sure the float cannot contact the basin cover.
The official guide illustrates installation through a 1/2-inch opening using the supplied nut and O-ring when a threaded spinweld is unavailable. Confirm that the basin is suitable before drilling it, because modifying a basin may affect its warranty.
Shut off the incoming supply, then check whether the float is touching the basin cover, whether it moves freely and whether supply pressure exceeds 30 PSI. Inspect all connections and the water feature for leaks before restoring the supply.
No. Continue checking the operating water level, pump submersion, valve movement and plumbing connections. An unusually frequent refill cycle may indicate excessive splash or a leak that needs attention.
