Create a beautiful sheet of flowing water from a retaining wall, patio wall, or garden hardscape with our Small Formal Falls® Kit. This complete recirculating waterfall system combines a 16-inch stainless steel spillway, concealed 42-gallon basin, and 1,800 GPH Clear Water Pump. The result is the movement and relaxing sound of falling water without the need for a traditional pond.
We've assembled the main operating components for a coordinated pond-less retaining wall waterfall. Your wall construction, finishing materials, and electrical service are planned separately.
Our Small Formal Falls® Weir (PB1779) creates a defined sheet of water. Its stainless steel construction features a supporting top that can be incorporated into a stacked-block or stone wall.
The weir has one 1-inch female threaded inlet and a self-draining design.
Our Small–Medium Formal Falls® Basin (PB1632) collects water below the waterfall and houses the pump and plumbing.
It includes an anti-splash mat, removable pump-access covers, and connection provisions for an optional auto-fill valve.
The included Blue Thumb Clear Water Pump (PB1038) recirculates water from the basin to the stainless spillway.
Its 1,800 GPH rating is the maximum pump flow; delivered flow varies with the plumbing and vertical lift.
The kit also includes:
Wall block, masonry or stone construction materials, decorative rock or pebbles, site preparation, and electrical service are separate. LED lighting and automatic water-level control are optional and are not included with PB1649.
For integrated color-changing basin lighting, consider our Small Formal Falls® Kit with Light (PB1649L).
The compact 16-inch spillway works well where you want the appearance and sound of a defined wall waterfall without the width of a larger installation. The basin can be placed in-ground or incorporated into an above-ground hardscape, provided it is supported, accessible, and installed according to our guide.
For a cleaner sheet of water and more controlled splash, we recommend a maximum 24-inch drop measured from the basin top to the stainless spillway. Taller drops can increase splash and wind-related water loss.
Plan around the full basin dimensions of 44.125 inches by 22 inches by 16 inches high. Allow additional space for the actual wall structure, basin access, plumbing, and decorative finishing.
The basin includes pre-installed connection ports that can support an optional auto-fill valve. Automatic filling can help replace water lost through evaporation and splash.
The valve and water-supply accessories are sold separately. Review our Fountain Basin Auto Fill Kit, but confirm the correct valve system for your Formal Falls® installation with our Sales/Tech Team before purchasing. Applicable auto-fill valves must not receive more than 30 PSI at the valve; use an appropriate regulator when supply pressure exceeds that limit.
Pump flow and head specifications describe the pump's published ratings, not guaranteed delivered waterfall flow. Actual performance depends on elevation, fittings, tubing, and installation conditions.
The Small and Medium Formal Falls® systems use the same 42-gallon basin. The Large Formal Falls® uses a bigger reservoir for its wider spillway.

A Formal Falls® installation involves preparing a suitable base, constructing a wall, positioning a concealed reservoir, and completing the plumbing and electrical setup. Use the official installation manual for the complete assembly instructions.
Build a suitable, level supporting base. Position the basin in relation to the wall and determine which plumbing connection will be used. Keep pump-access areas serviceable.
Install the discharge assembly, prefilter sock, and pump. Route the supplied flex hose through the planned connection path, following the manual for fitting preparation and sealing.
Place the 16-inch weir within the block or stone wall at the planned height. Connect its inlet to the recirculating plumbing and complete the wall according to the approved construction plan.
Complete the hardscape, add decorative stone around the basin, and keep the area directly below the falling sheet clear so water reaches the anti-splash mat. Fill the reservoir, inspect connections, then test the running waterfall.
Plan a suitable grounded, GFCI-protected electrical supply for the pump, consistent with the pump instructions and applicable electrical requirements. Keep plugs and connections protected from water exposure. Do not operate the pump without adequate water, and disconnect power before handling, cleaning, or servicing the equipment. Consult a qualified electrician when needed.
This kit is for freshwater applications only. Do not install or operate it in saltwater environments.
Keep the reservoir sufficiently filled to prevent the pump from running dry. Periodically rinse the pump prefilter, remove accumulated debris, and check the spillway for any buildup that interrupts the sheet of water. If the flow splits, inspect the weir opening for lodged debris and clean it carefully according to the maintenance guide.
The pump can operate continuously or be used with an appropriate timer, subject to its operating instructions. Normal evaporation and splash will require water replenishment unless an approved automatic-fill system is installed.
The stainless Formal Falls® spillway is self-draining, but the complete system still requires appropriate cold-weather care. In regions with prolonged freezing, our manual recommends removing the pump and storing it submerged in water in a location that will not freeze. Once the pump and plumbing assembly are removed, the spillway can drain.
The installation manual advises leaving the basin water in place through winter. At spring startup, remove the old basin water, replace it with fresh water, reconnect the pump, and inspect the system before operating.
Major components in this kit have separate limited warranties:
Coverage is subject to the conditions, proper installation, use, and exclusions in our official Blue Thumb Warranty Information (PDF). These are component-specific terms, not a lifetime warranty for the entire kit.
Review these official resources while planning wall dimensions, equipment placement, and plumbing. CAD drawings provide component reference information and should not replace the complete installation manual.
Need help confirming wall height, plumbing connections, optional lighting, auto-fill compatibility, or the right waterfall size? Our Sales/Tech Team can help you plan the system before ordering.
No. This is a pond-less recirculating waterfall system. Water falls into the concealed 42-gallon Formal Falls® basin, then the included pump returns it to the stainless spillway.
Yes. The Formal Falls® basin can be incorporated into in-ground or above-ground hardscape designs. Provide a suitable supporting base, access for pump maintenance, and enough room for the wall and plumbing.
No. PB1649 is the standard Small Formal Falls® Kit without lighting. If you want the coordinated color-changing LED basin light package, choose the Small Formal Falls® Kit with Light, PB1649L.
Yes. The basin has connection provisions for an optional auto-fill system. The valve, incoming water line, and any needed pressure regulator are sold separately. Contact our Sales/Tech Team to confirm the correct valve kit before ordering.
Debris lodged in the spillway opening can interrupt the water sheet. Inspect and carefully clean the opening when the flow becomes uneven. Also check the pump prefilter, water level, and plumbing for restrictions.
Yes. Our installation manual allows continuous pump operation or operation with a suitable timer. Maintain the correct water level and follow the pump's electrical and operating instructions.
No. The kit is not intended for saltwater use, including saltwater pool applications. Contact our team if your project requires materials or equipment for a different water chemistry.
