Can I Use a Smaller Basin Reservoir for My Fountain? Here’s Why We Don’t Recommend It
When setting up a fountain, one of the most common questions we get is: Can I use a smaller basin reservoir to save space or cost? While it might seem like a simple adjustment, choosing a smaller basin can cause several issues that will impact your fountain’s performance and longevity.
At Blue Thumb, we match the correct size basin reservoir to every fountain in our kits for a reason. Here are a few key reasons why using a smaller basin isn’t recommended:
1. Water Storage Matters
A smaller basin holds less water. This means you’ll need to refill your fountain more frequently to keep the pump properly submerged. Our kits are designed so the water level stays consistent, minimizing maintenance and ensuring your pump remains protected from running dry.
2. Managing Splash
Fountains naturally splash—especially on breezy days. A smaller basin has a smaller footprint and won’t be able to catch all that splash. Over time, this leads to water loss and the potential for dry pump operation. Our correctly sized basins help keep water where it belongs.
3. Water in Motion Needs Room
Many fountain styles, such as ceramic vase or metal urn fountains, fill up internally before water flows out the top. With a smaller basin, that initial fill could use most (or all) of your stored water. You’ll find yourself constantly refilling the basin, and if you turn the pump off, the fountain can drain back into the undersized basin, overflowing into your landscape.
4. Don’t Overload the Basin
Fountains can be quite heavy—especially when filled with water. We size our basins to safely support the overall weight of the fountain(s). A smaller basin may not be strong enough to handle the load, risking structural failure or long-term damage.
In Summary:
While it might be tempting to downsize your basin, it often leads to more problems than it's worth. Trust the sizing recommendations in our kits—they’re designed to give you the best performance, longest life, and least maintenance for your fountain.
