A Natural Waterfall Without an Open Pond

Enjoy Moving Water

Create the sound and appearance of cascading water without maintaining a traditional fish pond. The water disappears into a concealed reservoir beneath decorative gravel.

Coordinated Components

The spillway, pump, water storage modules, plumbing, and liner are supplied together, reducing the need to select and match major system components individually.

Accessible Equipment

The Pondless® Waterfall Vault provides access to the submersible pump and includes an inspection opening for monitoring the reservoir water level.

Is This Waterfall Kit Right for Your Backyard?

The Aquascape DIY Backyard Waterfall Kit is intended for a relatively short, natural-style waterfall or stream. Its 22-inch spillway provides a broad starting point for arranging stone cascades within a compact installation.

This is particularly useful when you want the visual impact of a wider waterfall but do not need an extended stream running across your landscape.

Plan for the Underground Reservoir

Aquascape's installation manual identifies an approximate 32-inch-wide by 48-inch-long reservoir layout area. This is not the entire finished waterfall footprint.

The manual calls for an initial basin excavation approximately 18.5 inches deep, with an additional 7 inches of depth at the Pondless® Vault location. It also recommends allowing working space around the reservoir components for backfilling and compaction.

Leave additional room for the waterfall stream, decorative boulders, landscape grading, and access to the pump.

If your project requires a longer stream, compare this system with our DIY Mini 10" Cascading Falls Kit or DIY Small 20" Cascading Falls Kit .

Which Waterfall Kit Should You Choose?

Aquascape DIY Backyard Kit: Consider this model when you want a wider 22-inch spillway and a compact waterfall or stream up to approximately 3 feet long.

Blue Thumb Mini PB1373: A good option for a narrow waterfall with a stream up to approximately 4 feet long and 1–2 feet wide.

Blue Thumb Small PB1854: Consider this kit when your design calls for a longer stream, approximately 7 feet long and 2–4 feet wide.

All three are recirculating waterfall systems. Choose based on your actual stream layout, available installation area, and desired waterfall appearance, not spillway width alone.

Pump ratings are maximum manufacturer-rated flow values and do not represent guaranteed installed waterfall flow. Stream dimensions are published planning guidance, not interchangeable performance guarantees.

Planning and Installing Your Pondless® Waterfall

The Aquascape DIY Backyard Waterfall Kit is designed for DIY installation, but creating the finished waterfall still involves excavation, a level underground reservoir, liner installation, plumbing, and carefully placed rockwork.

The following stages summarize the process. Follow the official Aquascape instruction manual for the complete installation sequence.

Choose Your Location

Select a location visible from your patio, deck, window, or outdoor seating area. Plan the stream route and locate buried utilities before excavation.

Prepare the Reservoir Area

Position the Pondless® Vault and AquaBlox® modules to mark the excavation. Dig and level the basin according to the manufacturer's required depths and backfill allowances.

Install Underlayment and Liner

Remove sharp debris and place protective underlayment beneath the EPDM liner. Follow Aquascape's instructions for liner placement and reservoir assembly.

Connect the Pump and Plumbing

Install the EcoWave® pump inside the Pondless® Waterfall Vault. Route the kink-free pipe to the Waterfall Spillway and secure the specified connections.

Build the Waterfall

Arrange decorative boulders and gravel to form the cascade and stream. Install the spillway and use the supplied waterfall foam where directed to help channel water over the rockwork.

Fill, Test, and Finish

Fill the reservoir and monitor the water level through the inspection opening. Allow waterfall foam to cure as directed, then start the pump and check water flow. Trim excess liner only after testing.

Installation Tip

Do not permanently trim the liner before the waterfall has been filled and tested. Leave enough liner above the operating water and splash level to help prevent leaks outside the intended stream.

Connect electrical equipment only to an appropriate GFCI-protected outlet. Follow all manufacturer electrical safety instructions.

Maintenance and Seasonal Care

Routine Maintenance

A Pondless® waterfall does not require maintaining an exposed fish pond, but the recirculating system still needs periodic attention.

  • Monitor the reservoir water level and replace water lost to evaporation or splashing.
  • Remove fallen leaves and debris from the stream and reservoir area.
  • Inspect the pump and clean it as needed according to the pump instructions.
  • Use an appropriate fountain water treatment when needed and follow the treatment manufacturer's directions.
  • Check the waterfall path periodically for water escaping the liner.

Winter Care

In freezing climates, the system may be shut down for winter or operated with appropriate precautions.

When shutting down, Aquascape recommends removing the pump and plumbing assembly and storing them in a frost-free location. If operating during freezing weather, monitor the feature for ice buildup, restricted flow, and potential water loss.

Consult the official Aquascape instructions before winter operation or shutdown. Proper draining and winterization of applicable plumbing are important for warranty compliance.

Aquascape Manufacturer Warranty Information

The components in this Aquascape waterfall kit have different manufacturer warranty periods. Coverage applies to the specific components listed below.

Lifetime Warranty Waterfall Spillway and Pondless® Waterfall Vault

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a complete Pondless® waterfall kit?

Yes. The Aquascape DIY Backyard Waterfall Kit includes the 22-inch spillway, EcoWave® 2000 pump, Pondless® Waterfall Vault, two Small AquaBlox® modules, EPDM liner, protective underlayment, plumbing, and installation materials.

Decorative rocks, gravel, water, site-preparation materials, and electrical access must be supplied separately.

How does this Aquascape kit compare to Blue Thumb's Cascading Falls kits?

The Aquascape DIY Backyard Waterfall Kit has a 22-inch spillway and is designed for a waterfall or stream up to approximately 3 feet long.

Our Mini Cascading Falls Kit PB1373 has a 10-inch spillway and supports a planned stream up to approximately 4 feet long.

Our Small Cascading Falls Kit PB1854 has a 20-inch spillway and is intended for a longer stream of approximately 7 feet.

The best choice depends on the shape and size of your intended waterfall, available space, and preferred reservoir configuration.

Does this waterfall kit require an existing pond?

No. The system stores water in a lined underground reservoir instead of requiring an exposed pond.

Water is pumped to the top of the waterfall and flows back into the concealed reservoir, where it continuously recirculates.

Are rocks and gravel included with the kit?

No. Decorative rocks and gravel are purchased separately.

You'll need suitable stone to create the waterfall cascades, line the stream, and conceal the underground reservoir.

The amount of stone required depends on your finished waterfall design.

Is the included EcoWave® 2000 pump adjustable with a smartphone?

No smartphone-control capability is listed for the EcoWave® 2000 pump included in this kit.

Do not confuse this pump with Aquascape's separately offered adjustable-flow pump models. The supplied pump is an EcoWave® 2000.

How much maintenance does a Pondless® waterfall require?

Pondless® waterfalls generally require less routine care than traditional fish ponds, but they are not maintenance-free.

Check the reservoir water level, remove leaves and debris, and inspect and clean the pump periodically.

Water levels will decrease over time from evaporation and splashing.

Can I leave the waterfall running during winter?

Aquascape provides guidance for both seasonal shutdown and winter operation in freezing climates.

If operating during winter, monitor for ice dams, restricted flow, and water escaping the reservoir system.

If shutting down, Aquascape recommends removing the pump and plumbing assembly and storing them in a frost-free location.

Follow the manufacturer instructions for your specific climate and installation.

What warranty comes with the Aquascape DIY Backyard Waterfall Kit?

Different components have different manufacturer warranty periods.

Aquascape lists lifetime warranties on the Waterfall Spillway and Pondless® Waterfall Vault, a 20-year guarantee on the EPDM liner, a three-year limited warranty on the EcoWave® 2000 pump, and a one-year warranty on the kink-free pipe.

Coverage is subject to Aquascape's warranty terms, exclusions, and proof-of-purchase requirements.
