Create a natural-looking backyard waterfall without building a traditional pond. The Aquascape Backyard Waterfall Landscape Fountain Kit combines a 12-inch waterfall spillway, AquaSurge 2000 pump, and concealed AquaBasin 45 reservoir into one coordinated recirculating system.

Before You Order: Decorative Stone Is Not Included

This kit includes the primary mechanical components, liner, plumbing, and installation materials. You will supply the decorative rocks and gravel that create the finished waterfall.

Aquascape's installation manual estimates approximately 1,000 pounds of stone and 300 pounds of 1"–1.5" gravel for a typical installation. Actual quantities depend on your design.

Planning Your Waterfall

Aquascape describes this kit as suitable for creating a waterfall feature up to approximately 3 feet. The finished dimensions depend on your stone arrangement, elevation, and available liner.

The AquaBasin is installed underground at the bottom of the waterfall. Allow additional space behind the basin for the waterfall structure and room to access the pump.

Unlike larger pondless waterfall systems with separate underground storage modules and pump vaults, this kit uses the AquaBasin 45 as its concealed reservoir.

Installing Your Pond-less Waterfall

This is a coordinated DIY system, but installation requires excavation, plumbing, liner placement, and substantial stonework. Review the manufacturer's complete instructions before beginning.

Choose Your Location

Select a location visible from your patio, deck, or living area. Plan the waterfall's direction, the underground basin position, and access to a properly protected electrical outlet.

Excavate and Install the AquaBasin

Mark the basin footprint and excavate according to the installation manual. Aquascape calls for a hole approximately 17 inches deep so the basin can sit flush with the finished landscape. Install and level the reservoir.

Connect the Pump and Plumbing

Install the supplied AquaSurge low suction intake attachment and connect the pump to the basin plumbing using the included fittings and flexible PVC pipe.

Build the Waterfall and Position the Spillway

Install the underlayment and EPDM liner. Arrange the larger stones to create the desired cascading effect. Position and level the 12-inch spillway, make the plumbing connection, and use the included waterfall foam to help direct water over the visible rockwork.

Fill, Start, and Adjust

Fill the reservoir before operating the pump. Once sealants have cured as directed, start the waterfall and check for leaks or water escaping over the liner edges. Adjust the stones and water path before trimming the excess liner.

Important Installation and Electrical Safety

Connect the pump directly to a properly grounded, outdoor GFCI-protected electrical receptacle. Do not use an extension cord.

This system is not approved for swimming pools or marine applications. Locate underground utilities before excavation and follow applicable electrical and installation requirements.

Waterfall Maintenance and Winter Care

Pond-less waterfalls generally require less routine care than traditional fish ponds, but they are not maintenance-free.

  • Check the reservoir water level regularly and replenish water lost through evaporation and splashing.
  • Remove leaves, twigs, and other debris that accumulate in the waterfall.
  • Inspect the pump intake and clean the pump as directed by the manufacturer.
  • Use appropriate fountain water treatments according to their instructions.
  • In freezing weather, monitor operating waterfalls for ice dams that could redirect water outside the lined area.

If you shut the system down for winter, Aquascape recommends removing the pump and plumbing assembly and storing them in a frost-free location.

Does this waterfall kit require a pond?

No. This is a pond-less waterfall system. Water flows over the rocks and disappears into the concealed AquaBasin reservoir, where it is recirculated back to the spillway.

Are the decorative rocks and gravel included?

No. Decorative rocks and gravel are sold separately. Aquascape estimates approximately 1,000 pounds of stone and 300 pounds of 1"–1.5" gravel for a typical installation. Your actual requirements will depend on the finished design.

What's the difference between this kit and Blue Thumb's Mini Cascading Falls Kit?

The Aquascape kit includes a 12-inch spillway, AquaSurge 2000 pump, and AquaBasin 45 with up to 98 gallons of water storage. Should I choose the Aquascape kit or Blue Thumb's Small 20-inch kit?

Choose based on your preferred waterfall width, layout, and reservoir design. Aquascape's kit has a 12-inch spillway and larger-capacity AquaBasin reservoir. Does this kit include an automatic water-fill system?

No automatic water-fill system is listed among the included components. The reservoir must be monitored and refilled as needed to compensate for evaporation and splashing.

Is the waterfall lighting included?

No. LED waterfall lighting is an optional addition. Aquascape recommends planning lighting placement during construction, before the basin and surrounding stonework are completely covered.

Can I leave the waterfall running during winter?

Aquascape allows for seasonal operation when conditions permit, but running a waterfall during freezing weather requires regular monitoring for ice dams and water loss. If shutting down, remove the pump and plumbing assembly and store them in a frost-free location.
